Kitchen Renovation Checklist: Plan the Project in the Right Order
Kitchen renovations involve more interconnected decisions than almost any other room. This checklist follows the order that helps prevent cabinets, appliances, plumbing, electrical and countertops from colliding with one another later.
Use this checklist to organize your kitchen renovation, then we can help turn it into a clear scope, sequence and written estimate.
1. Define what is changing
Decide whether you are refreshing finishes, replacing the kitchen in the same footprint or changing the layout. That single decision affects almost every trade and cost category.
2. Measure and plan cabinetry
Cabinet dimensions establish the framework for appliances, counters, plumbing and electrical. Finalize the plan before ordering products that depend on cabinet openings or clearances.
3. Select appliances early
Know the exact refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave and hood dimensions before cabinetry is finalized. Appliance specifications can change electrical, ventilation and cabinet requirements.
4. Confirm plumbing, electrical and ventilation
Plan sink, dishwasher, receptacles, lighting, range connection and ventilation before walls and cabinets are closed in. This is also the point to identify whether panel capacity or additional circuits are needed.
5. Check permit requirements
Structural changes, significant plumbing work and other regulated work may require permits or inspections. Confirm the requirements for the actual scope before construction begins.
6. Order long-lead materials
Cabinets, appliances, specialty fixtures and some tile or flooring can have long lead times. Confirm availability before demolition whenever possible.
7. Demolition and hidden-condition review
Once the old kitchen is removed, inspect framing, plumbing, wiring, subfloor and walls before rebuilding. Address hidden issues while the room is already open.
8. Rough-ins, walls and flooring
Complete the trade work first, then close and prepare walls. Coordinate flooring with the cabinet plan so transitions and finished heights are intentional.
9. Cabinets, countertops and backsplash
Install cabinets level and secure, then template countertops. After countertops are installed, backsplash and final plumbing or electrical trim can follow.
10. Final walkthrough
Test every appliance, receptacle, light, faucet, drawer and door. Check caulking, paint touch-ups, cabinet alignment and any remaining punch-list items before closing the project.
